Happy Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom

Juneteenth.png

Happy Juneteenth!

Today marks the first time in our nation’s history that we celebrate this important day together, officially, as a nation. Yesterday, President Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a federal holiday, celebrating the end to slavery in our country.

Freedom has a central place in the moral compass of our nation. Undoubtedly, the histories and struggles of African American peoples in our country have shaped and defined what freedom means to us in America, and forever will be a litmus test to how well we walk our freedom talk.

Resources on Teaching Children about Juneteenth

At Springwell, we aim for wholeness. And there can be no wholeness without recognition, restoration, and celebration. This means studying, learning about, and understanding all part of our histories, both the light and the dark. This means helping students make sense of and learn from both the light and the dark times of our history.

Parents and teachers, here are some great resources and ideas on how we can learn about and celebrate Juneteenth with our children. Enjoy!

Today, at Springwell, we read Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold, a lovely book about freedom, liberation, and flight. Our two classrooms worked together on how we would help others with our special powers and where we would go if we could fly. Then, we turned the responses into a beautiful quilt.
